DT Cameos>> Jim Smith Jim Smith was manager of Derby County from June 1995, and by 1998 had had Dean Sturridge under his watch throughout that time. Fellow Premier League boss Ian Coates had been interested in bringing Dean in since being appointed at Harchester earlier that season, and with the club in a desperate bid to hold onto their top flight status (which they'd only regained that season), Coates has just about enough to make his approach on transfer deadline day. Visiting Pride Park, Ian offers £5.5M for Sturridge, which Jim takes to his board. Ian then accompanies Jim and Dean to Derby's training session, before putting forward his terms of a £150K bonus if Harchester stay in the Premiership. That summer after Harchester have stayed up with help from Dean's input, he returns to Jim at Derby.
