Chris was raised single-handedly by his mom Alison, and when he was a young boy Matt Webster came into their lives, giving Chris the father-figure he had never had. Matt in turn saw Chris as his own son, and passed on his love for Harchester United which saw them attend every home game together. By the end of the 2002-03 season when Chris was ten, it had been five years since the family had had a holiday, and Alison had organsied a long-awaited trip to Spain. Shortly after arriving, Matt received an unexpected call from the club informing him his seat had been reallocated for the hastily rescheduled Everton replay, and not wanting to miss the game, gets hold of two tickets meaning Alison must stay behind. Matt and Chris end up arriving just as the game has finished, and when she gets back Alison leaves Matt but still lets him see Chris.

Matt sees Donna's story in the paper, and the picture of her with seat #61, which had been his seat for the last eleven years, and brings Harchester United into Chris's life beyond their weekly view from the stands. In his quest to prove he is the rightful claimant to the club, the Dragon's alumni pass through Matt's door - legend Karl Fletcher paying them a visit after Matt offers to help him resolve his contract worries, to both he and Chris’s bewilderment. They also get to know former agent Jeff Stein as he coaches Chris's under-elevens Sunday team. Jeff discovers an untapped talent in Lee Presley, and in order to help him reach his potential, the two move in with Matt, and Chris knows Lee is going to be a big future star of the team. Even when the troubled Lee burgles Matt's house and steals Chris's money.

Matt's court case arrives, and Chris sits in the public gallery, but when Alison is forced to admit that Matt did receive a letter only she destroyed it without him ever knowing, so they would still be able to go on holiday, the judge rules that Harchester were in their right to reallocate Matt’s seat, and his claim no longer has any merit. Chris sits with Matt in his bedroom, and wants things to go back to how they were, with them just attending games and pretending this never happened. Matt can't forget, when he has lost his dream, and tells Chris he must go away. Chris gives Matt a goodbye hug, calling him "Dad" for the first time, and not knowing when he will see him again.
