Duration: EP: 302, 304 - 305, 318 | SE: 7.10, 7.12 – 7.13, 7.26
Luke Davenport's father Robert lived with Fuchs’ Dystrophy, a hereditary eye condition that by his mid-50's had left him blind. It had always been at the back of Luke's mind that he too could develop the illness, but there could not have been a worse time when the first symptoms appeared only months after he had signed for his new club Harchester United, and received his England call-up. Dazzled by the sight of an oncoming headlight, Luke bumps his car, and it is witnessed by hack Paul Hankin, who initially suspects Luke was drink driving.
Luke makes a discreet visit to Dr. Solley, his father's ophthalmologist at the Wilkins Foundation Clinic, where his diagnosis is confirmed. Luke has the option of surgery to save his eyesight but there are risks; Luke could go blind completely and it is not recommended he return to a professional sports career. Luke assures Pilar Hernandez, who is desperate for him to return, that he will be back in eight-to-ten weeks. The surgery is a success, but when Solley phones the club to speak with the absent Pilar, Marcel is suspicious and re-dials learning about the clinic. He and Abi Fletcher go to the clinic where they find Luke recovering and learn of his condition.
Over the following months while Luke recuperates, Harchester is liquidated, but when he is the last roll of the dice in getting the club up and running again, decides to return. Although back to his best, a rise for a challenge sees him clash heads with John Terry, and substantial damage is done to Luke's right eye. Solley and a team of surgeons work to save his eye but too much damage has been caused, and it has to be removed. Coming round, Luke doesn’t need to ask Solley for he already knows his eye, and his playing career, has gone.
