Jessica Hibbs (Sam Grey) 2005, 2006
Duration: EP: 367, 376 - 378 | SE: 9.11, 9.20 – 9.22
Jessica is the daughter of Fraser Hibbs, who was Charlton Athletic's academy head coach during the 1990's. She had known Casper Rose all of her life, as his father Terry Rose was a long-time friend of her dad's. And from the age of eleven Jess had liked academy player Eugene Christie, but going into a care home following the death of his mother saw Gene drop out. It was another three years before Jess encountered him again, as he and crime associate Marlon Baldon are burgling her dad's office. Jess locks them inside, while her dad is determined not to let one of the greatest young talents he'd seen slip away again. Forcing Terry to face up to his secret responsibility of being Eugene's natural father, Gene moves in with the Roses, gets his football back on track, and is properly re-introduced to Jessica.
Jessica is Eugene's steady girlfriend for the next two years, until the discovery of his parentage through Terry needing a life-saving transplant sends him off the rails again. At this time, Jessica discovers she is pregnant. Knowing Eugene is not in a good place to be a father, and unsure whether she could cope raising the child alone, Jessica confides in Cass, who unknown to her is harbouring deep jealousy for the brother he believes Terry loves more and has better footballing prospects than himself. While Jessica attends a termination clinic, Cass uses what he knows to make Eugene chose between his girlfriend and a dream move to Liverpool. The brothers' relationship is destroyed, and Jessica goes to live in Australia when Hibbsey takes a coaching job there.
There is no contact between the two for the next five years, until a big court case where Eugene, now playing with Casper at Harchester United, is acquitted of burglary, and an Australian reporter Angie Walker uncovers the story of Jessica, believing there's a scoop that Eugene could play for the Australian Football Federation. Approaching Eugene, Angie introduces him to Lucy, who she claims is his daughter. It isn't until Jessica appears beside her that he realises it's true. Eugene takes it badly, which shows Jessica that Angie lied to her when she said Eugene wanted to see them. Jess believes Lucy has a right to know who her real father is, but Lucy is uneasy with Eugene as she has been raised by Jessica’s husband Paul. Jessica wants to leave, before Lucy has seen Eugene play, and Cass can't convince her to stay. Jess sends Gene a voicemail saying it was just too much too soon, and in time they can sort him seeing Lucy again. After initially reacting badly to both Jess and her husband, Eugene later gives up his football career in England to be near Lucy in Australia.
