Stuart gets a call at training - a young man has been apprehended breaking into his house at the Barrons. Arriving home, Stuart informs the officer he knows exactly who the "burglar" is - his son! Stuart is shocked to hear Ryan has walked out on Birmingham City simply because a coach played him out of position. When Ryan asks Stuart to lend two grand he knows there is more to this. With no money for a new player beyond Mendoza, Stuart gets Ryan a trial with Patrick. Out to lunch with the lads, Fletch is confused when he sees Abi at a table with another man. Abi introduces Jimmy as an old friend from college, but Fletch is rattled like he's not being told something. Fletch gets a shock when Robbie tells him Abi handed Jimmy a cheque.

Stuart tells Ryan he will get him his two grand if he comes to training for a trial. Fletch gets it out of Abi that she went to college with Jimmy for three years and Jack, his three-year-old son, has got cancer. Fletch is still suspicious that Jimmy is her old boyfriend, and stops the ten grand cheque she wrote for him. Stuart introduces Ryan in training as Ryan Greene. When Phil suggests she take an executive role at the club, Jacqui wants the Marketing Manager role, and Nikki tells her how good Claudia was at it, which gives Jacqui an idea. After Ryan outperforms Fletch in training, the lads give him a welcome by putting his clothes in the shower.

Patrick informs Stuart Birmingham have filled him in on Ryan's real identity, and more importantly, why he left. Stuart confronts Ryan over he being chucked out over suspected arson but Ryan denies he was responsible. Jimmy turns up at Abi's angry that the cheque was stopped. Abi realises it was Fletch, but is left shocked when Jimmy says he could get double if he went to the papers with stories of he and Abi's wild student days. When Abi confronts Fletch with what Jimmy is threatening, Fletch is stunned to realise the stories of Abi involved in sex parties is true. Jacqui travels to central London where she sets up a meeting with Sky for her new business venture.

Abi gets a message from Jimmy apologising for what he's done and soon the press are at Abi's door wanting to speak to her. Abi can't believe her eyes when she finds Fletch with the team gambling with thousands of pounds over a card game, and informs them Fletch stopped a cheque for a three-year-old needing an operation. Fletch brings home the money he's won at the game, and gives it to Abi to make it up to her, and pass on to Jimmy. Patrick extends Ryan’s trial to a month. Jacqui gives Phil her big reveal - she is setting up Harchester United Television - HUTV. When Phil worries about how it will be paid for, Jacqui informs him they will hire everything in until they have enough subscribers to pay for their own equipment. More importantly, nothing will need to eat into their remaining lottery winnings, which leaves Phil squirming!

Notes:

First appearance of Ryan Naysmith (Ricky Whittle)

Best Known For: James Daffern was another DT face in "Days That Shook the World" (2005). He also starred in "Emmerdale" (5 eps, 2008), "Home Time" (3 eps, 2009), "Hunted" (3 eps, 2012), "Raised by Wolves" (2 eps, 2012), "The Nevers" (3 eps, 2023), "DI Ray" (2 eps, 2024) and "Phoenix Rise" (3 eps, 2024). During the time of his DT stint in 2002-03 however, he had received widespread recognition for a Fiat Punto advert asking "Don't You Want Me Baby?"

The Best: When calling a truce with Fletch Ryan discovers playing for the club is Fletch's dream. He is given advice which Fletch’s dad always used to say - that everyone behaves like a plonker once in their life, it's what makes us human.

Quotes: Ryan tells Stuart he “hasn’t asked how mom and Scarlett are", which sounds like Stuart has a daughter. However, there is no further mention of this character, and their time in the show together does put across that Ryan is Stuart’s only child. An abandoned Season 9 story (confirmed by Ricky Whittle) was that Ryan had been married to his teenage girlfriend, so maybe that was Scarlett?

Additional Info: Ryan has been with Birmingham City for the last four years. Obviously wanting to make good use of an available Midlands actor beyond this one episode stint, James Daffern returns from 7.1 Groundhog Day in the regular role of Harchester local Matt Webster.

Soundtrack: Colours: "Another One",  Solid Sessions: "Janeiro",  The Vines: "Outtathaway",  Shakedown: "Down",  Orinoko: "Island",  Anastacia: "Boom"
