Barry is Leyton Orient’s chairman when Harchester's caretaker manager Frank Patcham and its currently suspended manager Ian Coates visit Brisbane Road mid-way through the 1998-99 season. They are there to approach Ian's old team mate John Black, who is a defender for the Third Division club, to sign for the Dragon's in their FA Cup campaign. Following his suspension following a public tirade with a referee, and the separation of his wife and children after an affair, Coates, a recovering alcoholic, has started drinking and arrives at the stadium already well on his way to being drunk before going to the Players' Lounge bar for more. As Frank meets with Barry, Coates is half-cut and rude about not remembering last seeing Barry at Bethnal Green. Coates continues to be loud and obnoxious in Barry's earshot when they are trying to observe John's game, until Barry throws Ian out of the ground.
