The then-Third Division club was where defender John Black was playing, and old team mate Ian Coates, on suspension from the manager’s job at Harchester United, came with caretaker Frank Patcham to make an approach. Coates however, has relapsed in his alcoholism recovery following this, and arrives drunk, only to drink more at the Players’ Lounge bar. Frank has a good relationship with chairman Barry Hearn, but when a boozed-up Coates is loud and obnoxious as they try and observe John play, Barry orders Ian be chucked out. John signs for the Dragons, with a dream that he will finish his playing career by winning the FA Cup. When Harchester achieve this with a historic win over Manchester United at Wembley, John is caught in the crossfire of Jerry Block’s plan to remove love rival Luis Amor Rodriguez, and is shot and killed whilst shielding Lynda Block. The following season sees Orient back in business with Harchester, with striker Wes Kingsley joining the club. And a later transfer in 2001-02 sees second-choice goalkeeper Ashley Harrison head south. |
