Dream Team: Ashleigh’s infamous half-time team talk

(9.4) It’s A Man’s World [06/11/2005]

As Julia in the short film “Weekends in Brooklyn” (2007)

As Jackie Hughes in “Echo Beach” with Marcus Patric (2008)

The aptly-titled "It's A Man's World" episode where Ashleigh was tasked with leading a team who wouldn't follow instruction simply because she was a girl, and how after a day of insult, she faced them in her party gear and blonde wig I think is one of Dream Team's best scenes. That something that could sound so ridiculous when describing out-loud could be so beautiful when played out on-screen. I wondered can you recall what the atmosphere was like on set when you filmed that scene?

Ha! I basically poo'd myself. The idea of parading around in skin tight, heels and a wig made me turn green but that's the challenge of acting, sometimes you've got to bite the bullet. It's not me it's a character and I accepted the job, taking on the responsibility of breathing life into her so... get it done was my attitude. The other actors on the day were great, in as much as they laughed at my get up after the scene was completed but they all were brilliant and always professional, all actors know how hard it can be in a storyline, playing a murderer, a rape, or same sex scenes can sometimes be challenging. There's always a healthy degree of respect on sets for what we as actors are trying to achieve for your (the audience) entertainment. I'm glad you asked me about that and wrote you liked it, I never read about myself or my work on the net (it gives all public faces a headache worrying about what people think of you) so I'm glad I pulled it off... just!!!

Another of Ashleigh's popular stories was her long-running romance with Casper (Robert Kazinsky), with the story revealing he had bought the whole club as a way of bringing Ashleigh back into his life after losing her the night they met. I suppose there are less romantic ways a guy can pursue a girl?!

Those writers... A grand gesture indeed.

Ashleigh's ending was heartbreaking, last seen leaving a broken woman having lost Casper and her career. As that was the last we ever heard of her, do you think she would have got back on her feet and climbed her way back to the top of her career as before?

Ashleigh lost her marbles a bit inside, she was never meant to be there but I know she either pulled herself together, did her time and got out to a brighter future... perhaps a masseuse on a beach in Thailand (those hands, those skills!) OR... perhaps she took a darker route and decided to become a tattooed, jail kingpin, gained 50 pounds and shaved her head, rules the kitchen and can 'get things'.... bit like Red, in Orange is the new Black!

After Dream Team you continued acting through a number of shows, including landing another regular role, this time on Echo Beach. I remember the show launched in a blaze of publicity, is it true those involved would have liked it to have lasted much longer than it did?

Yes of course, we all loved the idea but in this day and age if you're not busting 10 million viewers in your first three episodes of season 1... you're toast! Many brilliant shows see the axe and others run for a decade. The money men dictate most of what we watch and that's the nature of this business. It keeps us all on our toes, but just to have been a part of such a unique idea to begin with, cast of awesome actors and location work in Cornwall, for me it was a great day at the office!

Having read that your favourite genre is Sci Fi, it must have been a proud role when you made it into Doctor Who for the story "Asylum of the Daleks" in 2012? Doctor Who always looks so much fun...

Dr Who was very funny! In the casting I had to run some chat then turn into a Dalek which let me tell you... was hilarious. Trying to keep a straight face whilst 'turning' in front of three strangers in a casting room was BIZARRE but... all in the name of entertainment! Having such a prestigious credit as Dr Who on my CV is amazing.
