Hari Lal (Sushil Chudasama) 1998
Duration: 72 (2.8) - 80 (2.16) When Jerry Block needed Councillor Lal's co-operation in getting planning permission to build Harchester United's new stadium, it was more than a bribe in an envelope Lal was looking for. With Block's position as Harchester's chairman, Lal made Jerry sort a place in the club's youth team for his son, Hari, to set him on his way as a goalkeeper. Youth team manager Frank Patcham cannot believe the position he has been put in, for no way does Hari have the same level of ability of the other boys in the team, and troublemaker Alex Wilkinson, with a trial hanging over him, is threatened by this. Hari becomes a target for Alex, followed by the other YT boys, beginning with a mock penalty shoot-out with Hari's mascot, a teddy bear, in goal. Frank is pressured by Jerry to have Hari on the bench for the Under 19's match between Harchester and Arsenal. When Simon Coggan is injured in goal, Hari is reluctantly put on, and it isn't long before Arsenal U19's have scored and everyone holds Hari responsible. When Hari inadvertently stops a back pass, a free kick is given to Arsenal, and It comes to a head when Hari disappears from the hostel, and Councillor Lal is on the warpath for the Harchester United management, which worries Jerry mostly about their deal. Frank speaks with the boys individually, and tells Alex if it's true then he is finished here. Denise tells her son he has to get out there and find Hari, otherwise he will be gone. Alex finds Hari sitting in the park, and Hari gives him an ultimatum; that Alex tells his dad, Frank and Jerry Block that he was behind all the stuff which happened to him. At the club, Hari has some words of his own for those in charge: Frank for not standing up to Jerry over knowing he wasn't good enough for the youth team, and his dad for how he wanted to be a part of a team because of his ability, not because he was part of a business deal. Hari collects his things and leaves the hostel, and the club, for good. The club isn't off entirely with Hari's departure, as Lal's accusations that his son was racially bullied out of the youth team bring an FA investigation to Harchester. |
