Sam informs Claudia that she is in charge of the club while Lynda is away. As the team arrive back from Craven Cottage, Stevie has been swigging away at his hipflask, and Linton reveals what he’d said in the tunnel about Nikki wasn't even true, so Stevie got a three match ban for nothing. Stevie whacks Linton, who falls back onto Fletch, who in turn yells his arm is broken again! Patrick informs Claudia of a sacking she’s to make - Nikki, stating he won't have his players fighting over a girl.

Fletch returns home to Stevie, and says his wrist has a hairline fracture meaning he'll be out for another two weeks. Stevie is apologetic, but Fletch tells him he wants him out of his house. Gemma has returned on Patrick's request, he believing she can secure a three-month contract with the club while business-lacking Claudia is at the helm. Gemma gives him her terms - that she and Patrick are over as her authority will be none if it's known she is sleeping with the manager.

Danny is stunned when Patrick wants to replace Stevie with he as the new captain, believing he has the leadership qualities and top of his game in the Ireland squad. An honoured Danny accepts. Stevie is gutted, and accuses Gemma of starting all the troubles he has. Stevie turns up at Nikki's looking for somewhere to sleep tonight. Nikki is out with Linton, and after agreeing to help him get a transfer out of the club, Claudia lets Stevie stay. Patrick doesn't take kindly to Claudia's plan, all to save her flatmate from the sack, adding Stevie is one of the best midfielders he has.

After being berated by Patrick in the showers, Stevie walks out wearing just a towel, which he then throws at Danny and leaves The Lair completely naked. Outside the door, Danny overhears Fletch and Jamie laughing over how he has no authority as captain, and how his girlfriend is old enough to be his mother. Nikki is stunned when Claudia explains she is having to fire her, and believes she is having to pay because of Stevie’s actions. Nikki carries her box of possessions home, where she finds Stevie asleep in the bedroom, and forces him out wearing just a duvet. Claudia returns to the house and finds her clothing scattered on the ground outside, before Nikki opens the door to give her a double slap!

Stevie sits by the canal and a group of teenage boys are shocked to recognise him as the great Stevie Shaw. Danny and Claudia begin a search for Stevie, and when they approach Nikki she is under Linton's influence, and accuses Claudia of wanting her out of the way so she could bed Stevie. Claudia explains it was innocent, and asks Nikki to remember how Stevie was a good friend when Gary was injured.

Danny, Claudia and Tash find Stevie canal side, as the teenage boys are taking pictures of him duvet-clad. Danny helps Stevie along, while Tash and Claudia negotiate £200, free season tickets and Players' Lounge passes in exchange for the camera. At the Parker's, Stevie feels guilty over his part in Nikki being fired, and feels even worse when Claudia has to tell him his transfer is not going ahead. Nikki arrives for work as normal, informing a shocked Claudia it's up to Lynda to tell her to go. Danny leads the team out to Leeds in the UEFA Cup, earning Stevie's respect as the new skipper.

Notes:

The Best: Patrick’s warning to Claudia if she doesn't fire Nikki he will call Sam and get him to fire his daughter! Danny looking out for Stevie when he was missing, more than down to his new role as team captain. Stevie’s mental health issues explored, as with Sean Hocknell in his final episodes, had the potential to be delved into deeper. Adam Allfrey the star of the episode.

Quotes: Nikki’s line to Claudia on how she won't be fired by “some jumped-up secretary" who won't compensate her.

Foreshadowing: Patrick’s chilling premonition to Stevie: "The next time you go behind my back to Little Miss Irving moaning about your troubles... it won't be a transfer you'll be wanting it's a coffin!”

Additional Info: Danny wins the Barclaycard Player of the Month award. Danny is nineteen at this point, while Patrick refers to Claudia as “Sam Irving’s twenty-two year old daughter”

What Was The Score?: Harchester win away against Fulham, with two goals from Danny. Harchester face Leeds in the UEFA Cup with goals from Linton and Danny, and are through to the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Cup.
