Jimmy, preparing for his first day as the new manager of Harchester United, learns Alex has confessed to the police. Jason is troubled to hear the news, especially as his trial is up this week. Jimmy meets with new owner Terry Harrison, who doesn't feel he has the experience of managing a team like this, and adds he has training… for now. Jimmy meets Gary who is with the reserves, and mistakenly accusing Jason of a wise-crack, Jason willingly gives Jimmy the start of fifty press-ups to show he is prepared to listen. Some of the first team are not impressed a "nobody" like Jimmy will now be managing them, and Jimmy thinks they aren't in the right frame for a training session this morning, instead telling them to lie down on the floor. Then, he switches on the sound of classical music, asking the lads to connect every single note one after the other, and if they can do that, there will be no need for questions.

Jason asks Gary if he could give him a run out at tomorrow's reserve team game, as it would be his last chance, but Gary tells him it would be best if he just called it a day now, and it's been nice working with him. As Liam will not open the door to anyone, Jimmy has to introduce himself from the letterbox, and tells Liam this isn't the man he's watched play. Katy learns that Gary has let Jason go, and is concerned when Jason shows he has given up, telling him he has to go back and make sure Jimmy will be at the game to see him play. Gary says he is surprised to see Jason back, and is told he wants to see his week out, and play in today's game too. Jimmy’s pally-attitude soon changes as he reminds the team he won't tolerate them not being out on the pitch already. Jimmy arrives at the Grange to find Chloe receiving all of her possessions from Liam - dumped in the middle of reception. Chloe tells Jimmy he'll never get Liam to play unless he knows she has accepted their marriage is over, because Liam loves truth more than anything, and hands her wedding ring to Jimmy.

In a desperate attempt to get onto the team sheet, Jason asks Bradley would he fake an injury in order to let him have his place. Bradley wants his own chance with the gaffer, and as he is leaving, slips on the wet floor of the showers, injuring his ankle. With Bradley out, Jason is relieved to have made the team sheet as a sub, only Jimmy tells him he has other plans and won't make the game, even after Jason tells him he won't be here next week. Katy goes up to Jimmy and pleads his case that this is Jason's last chance, which gets her nowhere, but gains Jimmy’s respect. Jimmy goes to Liam's where he puts the envelope containing Chloe’s ring through his letterbox, while outside, he hears the sound of classical music coming from the Moody's, and is pleased Gavin is following his regime. Gavin is, in fact, making out with Cindi. Suddenly, an angry Liam charges out of his front door like a man possessed, and he loudly pins Jimmy up against the wall, causing Sully and Gavin to come running to pull Liam off him. Once restrained, Jimmy tells Liam he needs to pull himself out of this before it swallows him up, confiding that one of the reasons he came to the club was to work with Liam. Liam’s attitude convinces Jimmy to attend the game.

The reserves head out against Orient, and Katy, Phil and Deano are there to support Jason with a 'Tyre Boy Forever' banner. Liam tells Gavin he has no idea what he's going to do, and then asks Gavin whether he wants to go watch the game. Jimmy has a word with Gary and Jason gets his moment - to Katy and the boys' delight. Not long after Jason has gone on however, Liam and Gavin arrive and Jimmy's attention is diverted. Liam tells Jimmy not to judge him on what he’s seen so far as it hasn’t been him, but he is prepared to give him 110%, like all managers. They return to the game in time to see Jason go down with a nasty looking knock, and Shakey thinks Jason may have damaged a nerve. Jason shows strong determination however, and gets up wanting to continue. Soon he is back to his best, and contributes to the scoring of a goal. After the match, Jimmy waits for Jason, and tells him it took guts doing what he did, and offers Jason a pro contract! Jason is ecstatic, and promises not to let Jimmy down. Jimmy then gets a call to meet Harrison, and arrives full of enthusiasm, but is met with a settlement for £300,000 and an ultimatum that this is the only option for him, and the club.

Notes:

Last appearance of Chloe Tyler (Julie Healy)

Best Known For: Tony Selby had over 140 credits in a career spanning back to the 1950’s. Early roles included the Nell Dunn/Ken Loach "Up The Junction" (1965) and "Poor Cow" (1967) and "Alfie" (1966). In the 70’s he starred in "Ace of Wands" (1970-71) and had film roles in the Richard Burton led "Villain" (1971) and “Superman” (1978) alongside Corporal Marsh "Get Some In!" (1975-78). Towards the end of it’s original run, he had a memorable role in “Doctor Who” as Sabalom Glitz (1986-1987), "Love Hurts" (1992-94) and Sgt. 'Nozzer' Richardson in "The Detectives" (1994-97). His last film role was "Cockneys vs Zombies" (2012).

The Best: Jimmy Craig has a great first (full) episode, setting out his methods as a manager and his relationship with his players. Sadly bogged down by family dramas coming up. Jason thinking God is on his side when Bradley is ‘struck down’ in the showers.

Quotes: Terry Harrison, holding a Jerry Block-esc style press conference, and shares his shock from having “taken over from a man who's confessed to killing his own brother(!)”

Foreshadowing: From Jimmy’s line of “I’ve sat where you are sitting” to Liam, Rachel Craig has already had an affair with another man who is not David whom we see in 10.14 A Night To Remember. Jimmy hears the radio announce Alan Curbishley is a hot favourite to take over as full time manager (see next episode).

Additional Info: Terry is described as a "Reclusive Dragon’s fan and call-centre magnate". He mentions a son, Nicholas, who is flying in from Barbados to take up the vacant chief exec role, but we never see the character. Amy informs Jimmy that Pavel is in hospital in Switzerland, having surgery for testicular cancer.

Soundtrack: David Ford: "I Don't Care What You Call Me",  Embrace: "Ashes" and "Spell It Out",  Graham Coxon: "You and I",  Janis Joplin: "Ball and Chain",  Kasabian: "The Reason Is Treason (Remix)",  Snow Patrol: "Hands Open",  Stereophonics: "Superman",  The Dandy Warhols: "Get Off",  The Kooks: "You Don't Love Me"
