So sinister we never even learned his first name (though it was rumoured to be Simon as with the actor), Mr MacKinley was a seemingly easy-to-find assassin. When Jerry Block discovered his wife Lynda was planning on running away to Buenos Aires with player-manager Luis Amor Rodriguez following the FA Cup final at Wembley, he knew he had little time to hang onto her and permanently remove his love rival. Approaching MacKinley, Jerry requests his 'services' in having Luis shot dead during the post-match events on the pitch. Jerry names his price as one million, and MacKinley tells him he will have to take the equipment into Wembley with him, as the chairman can get away with not being frisked.
Before the team coach leaves for London, Jerry hands MacKinley a briefcase containing his initial payment for tomorrow. Harchester win, and as the players and fans celebrate, MacKinley is in place behind the scoreboard waiting for his moment. To Jerry's horror, Fletch pulls Lynda away into the path of Luis... and the firing line! MacKinley shoots, grazing Lynda's head, and aiming for a second shot at the close-by Luis, hits captain John Black as he shields Lynda, killing him outright.
MacKinley disappears, leaving Jerry to outride the police investigation, but still determined to get the other half of his payment, reappears that Christmas as Harchester are again in London facing West Ham in the UEFA Cup Third Round Second Leg. MacKinley marches Jerry onto a deserted construction site and pointing a gun at him orders him to kneel. Jerry protests that MacKinley killed the wrong man, plus nearly killed his wife, so why should he pay him the further half million? MacKinley concedes, and says he'll go and finish the job now. When Luis's knee gives way on the pitch, Jerry spots MacKinley posing as a paramedic accompanying Luis off the pitch. Jerry then comes face to face with MacKinley as he closes the ambulance doors with Luis inside. Luis is safe, and Jerry thinks he has escaped MacKinley, only to look up into the gents mirror to see him standing behind him. MacKinley gives Jerry a fortnight to come up with half-a-million pounds - otherwise he knows what will happen.
Jerry next hears from MacKinley when he directs him to bring the money to a disused abattoir, only it takes Jerry longer to get the money and MacKinley gets tired of waiting. MacKinley turns up at the club and Jerry gives him the briefcase, with D.I. Dawson in the room next door! Dawson walks in to see Jerry, and MacKinley stands in the middle of them both, to Jerry’s horror. MacKinley calmly walks away with the rest of his money and is never heard from again. Though the incident ultimately sends Jerry on his way, when Lynda and Luis discover Sean Hocknell recorded Jerry passing MacKinley the first payment as the coach was due to leave for Wembley. |
