Lynda cries to Luis over uncovering Jerry's plot and what he's
put her through, and how she even ran away to Ray but he sent for
Jerry. Luis is ready to go and confront Jerry. Jerry realises that Luis is
returning tonight and that Lynda has gone to meet him. Maxine advises Jerry to
stay away because of what Lynda has accused him of, and to let them come to
him. Marilyn and Ray have also turned up to meet Luis, but get a less than warm reception
when Luis accuses Ray of letting him down over looking out for Lynda. Billy has a business
dinner with Ray, who tells him in order to get him the raise he deserves,
they will have to start looking at other clubs, though Billy wants to stay at
Harchester. In the taxi Luis says he will make Jerry sell him
and then they will leave Harchester and never return. Lynda asks about Jerry
getting away with the shooting, but Luis wants to leave it in the past, as he
didn't kill either of them. Ray stumbles upon Billy in The Grange restaurant
when he should be resting for the weekend's game, and discovers he is eating
with Jeff Stein. Billy defends Ray
to Jeff, saying when Leon died Ray really looked out for him. Jeff dismisses
Ray as being paid to do the club’s work, and wouldn't be his friend but
his boss. Luis and Lynda turn up at the house and he and Jerry have a
showdown on the doorstep, with Luis asking what could Jerry do to stop him
now, kill him? While Jerry responds with how right after Luis left Lynda was
in bed with Didier, and calls Lynda a
slag, which is met with an almighty right-hook from Luis! Inside, Lynda reminds Jerry what he said to Maxine
about not missing next time, but Maxine denies she heard Jerry say this, and Lynda
has to be held back from going for her. Jerry threatens Luis that if he
repeats Lynda's allegation to anyone he will sue him for every last peso he
has. Maxine comes in on Lynda packing, and tries to blag a red dress Lynda
wouldn't take. When Maxine asks Lynda if she'll divorce Jerry, Lynda sees
Maxine wants him for herself, and hurls dresses Maxine couldn't fit into at
her sister until she has fled the room. Jerry makes it clear that while Luis
can have Lynda, he won't be leaving the club - as he signed a
three-year-contract. Fearing Luis has already ditched them for
Argentina, Marilyn is ready to offer Ray the permanent role as manager. Luis
tells Lynda he had already decided to resign as manager while away, because
his goal needs to be playing for Argentina in the World Cup before his career
ends. When Luis realises they could find a way out of Harchester through the
other club directors, Lynda reveals she happens to be one of them although
has never used any of her power. Lynda now sees this as revenge for Jerry
trying to have Luis killed, and with the club playing badly, the financial
mess and now the loss of a manager, she will see to it that the club is taken
off Jerry. Notes: Ray MacAllan’s regular stint as Jeff Stein
begins from this episode, having last guest appeared in 3.20. ·
The
Best: The return of Jeff, ready to fill the
fatherly-advice giving role missing to the players since Des Baker and Frank
Patcham departed, although in his own very different way. Luis sending Jerry
sprawled onto the gravel clutching his face. Lynda’s dress-wars on
Maxine, which sends her too running for cover. Quotes: Jeff (to Ray on Marilyn): "The lovely Miss Harwood. I do hope
she's learned more about this business since the last time I had dealings
with her!" ·
Continuity: Ray refers to the club having had five managers in three seasons. If
he’s marking the point where Atkinson left, you could say five in eight
years as he arrived in 1992, and presumably bypassing John Hollins’s
(Oct-Dec 97) and Frank Patcham’s caretaker stints (Jan-Feb 99), he goes
through Coates, Rodriguez, Gallagher and now him. Soundtrack: Sheryl Crow: “My Favourite Mistake” |
