Ric Mellis first came to DT in Season 3 in his career as a director, overseeing 2 episodes, 3.15 (#155)  Tuesday 9th November 1999 and 3.16 (#156)  Thursday 11th November 1999. He returned to the show later in the season to write 5 episodes.

Having worked as a floor manager on productions, his directing career took off in the mid-80's. 9 episodes of Granada's "Albion Market" (1985-86) ran alongside their main product "Coronation Street", and Ric directed 42 episodes between 1984-88. Further stints followed with "Emmerdale", directing 32 episodes between 1991-93, late-night drama with "Revelations" (4 eps, 1994-95) and "Hollyoaks" (10 eps, 1995-96, and again 1998-99).

After directing 9 episodes of "Brookside" in 1995, Ric returned to the series the following year as producer and then series producer by the time he left two years later. This time also saw him oversee the famous "Brookside: The Lost Weekend" video in 1997.

Ric's directing also stretched into video games, live action directing "Clue" in 1994 and the voice-over director for "Spot and His Friends" in 2000.
