Eddie and Scott arrive at the Lair for the second Rangers Leg to set upon a brand new sports car wrapped with a giant purple bow. Ann appears accompanied by Harchester Sound and a flurry of reporters, presenting Eddie with the sponsored car she promised for when he signed with her. Ann witnesses Didier Baptiste pull up in a taxi before embracing Ray, but is distracted by Michael's mood over her ‘publicity stunt’ with Eddie when they are about to play an important game.

Luis meanwhile has come to a decision over Scott and Michael, and informs a fuming Scott he will be starting on the bench, so much so Scott refuses to attend the team meeting. When Scott is about to spill his annoyance to Bob Adams, Eddie advises him he'll be fined more by Luis than what he'll be paid by the local radio station, and to save it for a five figure sum from the Sunday papers. Luis gets a more susceptive reaction when informing Wes he will be starting on the bench, as he wants to try something new today.

Jerry hears Luis has not selected Scott and goes straight to the dressing room to inform him there are millions riding on this game and Luis has no idea what will happen if they lose! Jerry goes home to collect Lynda but she cries she can't attend another football match, knowing there could be a contract out on her life. Luis gives his formation to the team; they will play four across the back and five in midfield. They will achieve their two goals with the two wide-midfielders (Billy right, Eddie left) who will push forward to support Luis. Ray adds the most important thing about tonight is no egos, no heroes, they move forward together and respect each other.

Marilyn introduces herself to Didier, and requests he as a World Cup winner meet the sponsors who were excited to see him here. Kitty reveals to Ann that Didier is an old friend of Ray and Luis's from their time at Monaco, and Didier is cryptic about possibly coming to England to play football. The game kicks off but Jerry has delayed meeting Mr Yoshimoto, still trying to coax Lynda to accompany him. She loses it and says she's only been good to rest and take her pills for the last two months so that's what she'll do. A heavy-set Scotsman strolls into the Exec Stand and confidently asks Marilyn where he can find Jerry. At half time, the Scotsman has been appointed by Jerry from phone to look after the sponsors.

Kitty suggests if Didier came to Harchester he'd work with Ray and Luis again. Ann asks her isn't this Ray's last game, and Kitty explains Ray has been so happy she can do without him for another month until the baby is born. Marilyn is stunned when the mystery man knows all about how she's Jerry's chief exec and introduces himself as Gordon Gallagher. When she is still none the wiser Gordon remarks on how Marilyn clearly hasn't been in the game long! As Jerry watches the second half, Lynda phones her mother and cries about how she is frightened. Ray makes his substitution, and Wes prepares for his big moment to go on as Eddie comes off.

Notes:

First appearances of Didier Baptiste (Tom Redhill / Sacha Grunpeter) and Gordon Gallagher (Campbell Morrison)

·          Best Known For: Campbell Morrison and Sacha Grunpeter sadly both died within a few years of each other. Amongst a 50+ credit career, Campbell Morrison appeared in the comedy “Life Without George” (1988-89), “Specials” (1991), memorable roles in the ill-fated “Eldorado” as Drew Lockhead (1992-93) and recurring DCI Charlie Mason in “EastEnders” (1996-99) and Harry Balfour in “Hamish Macbeth” (1995-97). He died in January 2008 aged 55.

Sacha Grunpeter, using his stage name Tom Redhill throughout his time in DT, had appeared in “Agony Again” (1995), the follow on from comedy “Agony”. He also did guest appearances in “Casualty” (1995), “The Bill” (2001) and the film “Beginner’s Luck” (2001). In July 2005 he was in Los Angeles filming “Tracing Cowboys” which he co-wrote, produced and starred in. On the last day of filming he was involved in a road accident and died as a result of his injuries. The film was released in 2008.

·          The Best: Scott on the radio with Bob, now being surprisingly diplomatic about Luis's decision to bench him but making it clear he is certain he will get on. Both Didier and Gordon’s introductions, with Didier’s guessing game for Ann on which English club, managed by a Frenchman, in either London or Merseyside he is likely to sign for! While Gordon mingles with the sponsors as a bemused Ann and Marilyn continue to wonder just who he is. Scott gets up he is stunned when Ray says it's Wes he wants!

Additional Info: This appearance of Bob Adams technically makes him the longest remaining character in the series at this point, until Karl Fletcher's return in 3.48, having appeared in 1.1 although always recurring.

  • What Was The Score?: Five minutes to half time and Harchester are awarded a free kick, which taken by Linger leads to a goal from Rodriguez. A mistake by Michael sees a free kick awarded to Rangers, but Kanchelskis shoots just wide. A pass from van Bronckhorst leads to Moore scoring for Rangers. The episodes ends with the scores 1-1.
