Warren Masters was released from a Bolton young offenders into the Harchester United youth team in 1996. Eventually, his father Kenny rocked up to see his son, and it was here he met Mandy Burley, with her falling pregnant a short time later. Kenny could never stay out of trouble, and wound up in prison for attempted murder, leaving Mandy struggling alone with their new daughter, Kayleigh. Warren had grown fond of Mandy and with virtually no other family around him, moved into Mandy's flat to be supportive.

Warren is soon again in trouble himself, only this time while defending a woman in a club, he assaults doorman Doug Hastings and is facing prison. Luckily, with Mandy's testimony and Frank Patcham's support, Warren gets off with community service. When her mom can look after Kayleigh, Mandy loves a good night out, but Warren is seemingly growing jealous of any man she is seen talking to. Mandy catches onto this, and when a similar incident occurs when she is Warren's guest at the Supporters' club Christmas party, she gets it out of him that he fancies her. Mandy actually reciprocates Warren's feelings and they sleep together.

A Christmas visit from Kenny brings them both back down to earth, and afterwards their relationship is tense and awkward. Warren moves into a flat with Conor, but soon he and Mandy have gotten together again. The confusion of his feelings for Mandy and his loyalty to his dad sends Warren off AWOL, and Frank tells Mandy she should do the right thing for Warren and let him go. The decision is taken out of both their hands when Kenny storms back in, first believing Mandy has had an affair with Frank, taking him hostage at the club and being restrained by Ian Coates in Harchester's dragon mascot costume. After this, Mandy and Warren part ways and she leaves.
