Gordon drives into The Lair and Kenny jumps into his passenger seat to say he has until tomorrow to pay his boss in full. The taking of Gordon's car, worth £20K means he now only owes £30K. Lynda is making a dash from the house in order to see someone, and tells Maxine if Jerry asks of her whereabouts to say she is ill. Marilyn knows Gordon has tried to sell the Lynda/Didier story, and just needs to get the tape, but fears to Ray that Gordon could have used his mobile to make the call. Gordon wants to know why Hankin hasn't printed the story or paid his money. He is shocked when Hankin replies the story isn't true, and Gordon makes an unusual request that Ray fetch four players from the youth team to “give the first team a kick up the backside”.

Jerry notices Lynda has locked her door and Maxine readily tells him that she's gone to meet someone and has been acting very strange. Maxine sinisterly puts her hand on Jerry and says she wants the best for he... and Lynda. At training, Gordon tells Scott and Michael to put their differences aside for today and to shake. Scott holds out his hand but Michael refuses, saying he'll remain professional but never shake his hand. Gordon remarks Scott can hardly blame him! Kelly visits Ann where she has been hiding in her room, not taking calls and Ann cries that she feels so bad as she and Michael were best friends.

Gordon tells a shocked Ray he is planning on playing all four of the youth team players today. He reminds Gordon Leeds brought their youth team players in gradually and this decision is suicide. Lynda sees D.I. Dawson and says she's got some information on Jerry for him. Gordon announces to the team that the substitutes will be Baptiste, Lucas, Kingsley, O'Neill and Coggan, while Michael is made captain. Didier challenges Gordon, who simply replies their results have not been good enough so he is injecting new blood into the squad. A desperate Gordon phones a contact and asks what the odds are on Leeds beating Harchester, and at 6-4 places £20K on Leeds to win.

Lynda reveals to Dawson what Jerry said, and how it implies he'd shoot again like he did at Wembley. Dawson learns for the first time Lynda was having an affair with Luis. Dawson tells Lynda he can't progress with the comment as it's not enough, though Lynda is adamant Jerry did it. Marilyn plays the tape with Gordon selling the story and thinks she's got him on that alone, only to hear his last phone call betting on Harchester to lose, and she is astonished. Marilyn phones Ray pitchside, and soon he has gotten hold of Gordon seething that unless he leaves now his next headline will be 'Gordon Gallagher Murdered on the Pitch!'

As he scurries away Gordon thinks he is home and dry when Bridges scores a second, which is then ruled off-side. Ray rightfully takes charge, taking off the youth teamers and replacing them with regulars O'Neill, Lucas and Kingsley. Marilyn snarls at Gordon how Harchester’s win today is exactly what he deserves. The final whistle goes and Jerry charges into the boardroom jubilant, to be played the tape by Marilyn of Gordon's calls. All Gordon can say to Jerry is that he's sorry, while his old friend responds by giving him a punch.

Notes:

The Best: Still getting glimpses of Harchester’s youth team here and there, as with Scott’s demotion in 3.23, with the focus having shifted solely to the first from this season. The exposing of Gallagher, from Marilyn’s Gotcha to Ray sending him on his way, to finally the realising of Jerry’s betrayal and punch.

·          Quotes: Marilyn leading Gordon’s downfall: "3-2! Now who would have believed that? That means Leeds have got to score twice to win. [Looks at watch and laughs] Not gonna happen is it?!"

Continuity: Dawson mentions how they’ve ruled out Councillor Lal’s involvement in the shooting.

·          Additional Info: We get the first sighting of Zoe Paphitis playing her namesake sitting behind the reception desk, likely taking over Zena Young’s former role. The youth teamers Gordon calls up are Simmons, Thompson, Blackwell and Hillaire – presumably Ian, who Luis previously brought through to bolster the team following the plane crash (#3.6) and who goes on to play for the club until 2004.

What Was The Score?: In the first half, Linger takes a free kick and Michael scores his first goal for Harchester. Leeds level in the second half with a goal from Harry Kewell. They are then 2-1 down as Michael Bridges scores. His second goal is ruled off-side. With Ray in charge and the youth teamers replaced, the teams are level at 2-2 once again with a goal from Wes. Lucas takes the lead and Harchester win 3-2.

·          Soundtrack: Moby: "Body-Rock"
